Rafael Barrios
Rafael Barrios (Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1947) is one of the most internationally acclaimed Venezuelan sculptors. Educated in Venezuela, Canada, and the United States, he developed a rigorous artistic exploration of geometry, perception, and the illusory transformation of space.
He began his artistic studies at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, where he received the National Youth Painting Award in 1963. He later graduated with honors in Fine Arts, Communication, and Design from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and furthered his education in Fine Arts and Monumental Sculpture Techniques at New York University.
Barrios’s work is distinguished by geometric metal structures that challenge perception. Through precisely constructed planes, color, and perspective, his sculptures appear to possess substantial volume, rise upward, or float in space. Yet, as viewers move around them, they reveal a surprising thinness. His technique makes the viewer an essential part of the artwork, as the movement of the observer’s gaze activates the multiple visual possibilities of each piece.
A defining milestone in his career was his 2012 installation on Park Avenue in New York City, where he presented ten monumental sculptures along this iconic Manhattan avenue. He was the first Venezuelan artist invited to participate in Park Avenue’s public sculpture program, further establishing the international significance of his work and his ability to transform urban spaces into perceptual experiences.
With exhibitions and monumental projects throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, Rafael Barrios holds a prominent place in contemporary geometric abstraction. His work invites a renewed perspective on space, gravity, and the boundaries of the visible.
